Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

SERVPRO of Gilbert - Gilbert Equipment Explainer

Restoring moisture equilibrium at a loss site is essential to prevent secondary problems such as bad odor and microbial growth. Excess moisture in properties could be the result of flooding incidents or other sources such as the water spilled by firefighters or cleaners. Whatever the cause, there is a need to remove it fast. Evaporation helps in the final phase of water removal. Our SERVPRO crews rely on advanced equipment like dehumidifiers and air movers to complete this phase.

"Today I want to talk to you a little bit about some of the different kinds of equipment we use here on a day-to-day basis," Naomi, the general manager from SERVPRO of Gilbert, says as she explains the independent roles played by air movers and dehumidifiers. "Here we have a couple of different varieties of air movers," she says showing the differently sized units we use in restoration projects. Apart from differences in size, air movers also differ in design, which can influence their operations. In this regard, air movers fall into centrifugal, axial or compact categories. Axial air movers produce less static pressure compared to centrifugal ones. Compact air movers are perfect for confined or hard to reach areas.

Air movers increase the natural rate of evaporation of water from wet materials to the surrounding air. Dehumidifiers extract such moisture from the air converting it back to liquid form for disposal. "Here we have a couple of different varieties of dehumidifiers," Naomi says pointing at different units. Dehumidifiers are also available in different sizes and types that help our SERVPRO technicians respond to the unique challenges in each loss environment. The tank size differs in different units affecting how restoration crews use them. "This tank has a larger volume able to hold more liquid which will let it sit on site unmaintained for a longer period of time," Naomi explains the benefit of a larger tank.

Proper balancing is necessary when using the equipment to dry property. As Naomi puts it, "the air movers push the moisture into the air, the dehumidifiers then take the moisture out of the air." Our SERVPRO technicians calculate the right ratio of air movers to dehumidifiers for balanced drying.
